Just as a bit of advice. if you haven't joined IOSH but intend to, do it now even as an affiliate member and get on the CPD cycle. the NVQ4 counts as 1 years full CPD and you need two years CPD before you can apply for Chartered membership.

True,

The points count with CPD and joining early is a good idea whilst undertaking your qualification

Thomas Ranby college in Leeds is good too.

And around 1200 pounds, there are grants there aswell..

Be careful because some providers will ask you for more money if you stay on the course longer than 2 years

If anyone is doing the NVQ 4 with the British Safety Council and want a study budy(s) then please drop me a line. I have completed and have had verified 8 units but I am struggling with the rest.

try NEW College at Bromsgrove, I know they are far away but they are one of the only ones I know who do the whole course by ENVQ, i.e. totally on line, and at around £850 all in, it's well worth looking into (as I am currently)

Anonymous said...

Jesus, 850 pounds is great !!

most places wont entertain anything under 1300 per year

I have completed the ENVQ with Bromsgrove & Redditch (NEW College)and am currently into my NVQ5.

The NVQ5 cost £870, my NVQ4 much less. NEW College are a centre of excellence for Health and Safety.

They meet monthly on a Tuesday. The course Assessor / IV is Robert Mantle and he can be contacted on remantle@madasafish.com

NEW college have assessors all over the place, in fact I am doing my A1 with them currently.

Might see you in the future.

Hi All,

I have completed my ENVQ4 with Bromsgrove (www.ne-worcs.ac.uk) at a cost far less than £850.

In fact I am now doing my NVQ 5 and this cost £870.

The NEW College meets monthly on a Tuesday, where ideas are shared.

The last meeting saw Dr Mark Cooper present Stress Risk Assessment and I delivered an introduction to BS OHSAS 18001:2007.

The course assessor is Robert Mantle and can be contacted by emailing: remantle@madasafish.com (please mention Lee Hart)

The next meeting is on Tuesday 9th October at the learning zone.

Look forward to seeing you there.

P.S.
After my own frustrations of understanding NVQ terminology, I produced an "NVQ How 2" Guide which explains how I completed my NVQ.

hi folks

Point to note, I have spoken to people who really can't get on with the eNVQ concept, lost evidence not downloaded etc, can be rather infuriating.

I would also always recommend meeting your potential assessor before parting with any money. If they bore the pants off you the NVQ will be a slog!

Linda

Hi Lee

I wonder if you would be so kind as to share your 'NVQ How to guide' as I need it explained in a langauge I can understand.

Cheers

Lee

can you post some of the information on here so we can all see it. Cant believe that the NVQ4 and 5 are so cheap near you. And you get to see your tutor on a regular basis.

I think the problem is that some tutors dont see you that often then they bill you for additional time spent doing the qualification which is wrong

Any info on the units would be great Lee

Thanks

Darren

Just a question

How long is everyone making their units when they type them up???

My assessor says around 2000 words but i was speaking to another friend who is doing the NVQ4 at Nottingham and his assessor has told him to do a "story board" which some of his units are around 750 words. He says that as long as the evidence ties in with the story board then you are ok

Just wondering what everyone else is doing ???

Thanks

Peter

storyboards are the best but depending on who is your assessor they might have different preferences

some prefer assignments some prefer storyboards. It doesnt state either in the standards

Another grey area.... Story boards win hands down though

Lee,
hope you don't mind, have e-mailed you direct. Would like to speak more if that o.k.? ref how you found the course etc

just wondering how long it takes to get your certificate after you have completed the NVQ4???

I have been waiting for 3 months already!! not happy, especially when i need to styart my CPD points

Anonymous said...

takes ages sometimes.

Your centre sometimes waits for a few candidates to finish before they send off for certificates.

3 months is the max that i know, if its longer start pertering them

pestering them, sorry :)

Hi folks,

I am looking for examples of a story board. Through this bloggsite, i believe you can get to the point more economically using a story board. I am trying to accelerate my progress.

Thanx in anticipation

Iain,

Story boards are fairly easy to do. Just a series of columns. One for Evidence (describe evidence), Unit (enter unit), Description (when the evidence was used and how), and finally a column for references.

So, all in all, its just a chart segregating what you did, how you did it, what reference you have for the unit etc

Slip each unit into the chart then pur the evidnence in for every unit (performance criteria). This will help for when you have a tutorial because your assessor will go through each question and say "what evidence do you have for that ?", so that the best way to do it. I wish i did it that way instead of writing reams and reams of paper.

Unfortunately i havent got an example but speak to your asessor how to do it ? or others on this website

Cheers

Mike

Hello

Can anyone who is nearing the end of their NVQ or who has completed it come up with some form of flow chart or schematic that would show how you could link the same piece of evidence into several of the units. I realise I can use for example one risk assessment for 406, 407 and 408 but can i cross reference it in any of the other sections.

Thanks for your time

Jude

Anonymous said...

Hey Jude :)

Its easy. Just give your evidence a refernce number and quote it on your story board when talking about it

You can use the same piece of evidence for loads of different units. Just quote the same evidence number ie) EV4

Thats all cross referencing is

Hello Gary.

Thank you for your response. I understand cross referencing - what i was looking for was a "cheats" guide on which sections i could use the same piece of information in. like if i do a fire risk assessment i can use it as part of 406, 407 and 408. will there be any other sections i can use the risk assessment in? planning or implementation or creating policies . sections 410 and 412, that kind of thing.

Although i did have a meet with my IV yesterday which has helped me link somem information together.

Jude

Anonymous said...

Yeah, you can use evidence for loads of different units.

I used my health and safety management system in nearly every unit for evidence

Fire units are handy for cross referencing too. Dont re-invent the wheel. The same evidence is ok for lots of different evidence criteria

Dear All,

Please let me clarify the costs with regard to the college where I study.

The LSC determines the level of support that is given to centres of excellence and the college then uses this information to agree its costs.

As the college is a education provider it is not allowed to charge thousands for something that does not cost thousands!

However if you live outside of the area serviced by the college (approximate radius of 50 miles centred both on Redditch & Bromsgrove) you may be quoted much more as the tutor will be required to travel much further and may encounter overnight costs.

Overnight and day out costs are fixed and are determined by the college directorate.

I hope this explains why some NVQs cost more than others.

I have withdrawn my NVQ How2 after a trial selling period on ebay. such was the success that I have decided to write a book.

This is in draft form, but almost ready to publish and should coincide with my NVQ 5 that I hope to achieve later this year.

It would be improper to release this information ahead of its publishing date; however please contact me direct should you require any clarification of what is required with any unit / element.

Thank you all for a wonderful response and further thanks to those that have contacted Robert Mantle at the college and enrolled!

Kind Regards,

Lee Hart

I wonder if any one can help. I am currently on the CPD cycle and have just completed my NVQ4, how do I award myself points for this?

Carl you mentioned that the NVQ counts for a years cycle, how do I put this into my CPD? and can I award points?

All advice appreciated.

Cheers

Anonymous said...

1) allocate up to 3 points per unit (depending on whether they have helped you improve your knowledge or not)

2) for example unit 412, set up a 'new task' in your MyIOSH and add the unit, then allocate the points that you think

If you only think that you learnt minimum then add yourself 1 point

On myIOSH i have got around 20 points in for my whole NVQ4 which I only need another 10 tp complete my full cycle.

Cheers

Jez

Evening all, at the mo I'm working as an assistant H&S/assurance manager and I'd like to do an NVQ 4, thing is I feel my employers may get upset with me doing this course as it would put me in a better possision than the actual manager and I dont really want to lose my job before I can gain a qualification. My question is do my employers have to know I'm doing the course? can I do it without them knowing then once finished let them know then?

It is essentially for those individuals who are practicing Health and Safety advisors with responsibility for influencing policy or those who maybe aspiring to become safety consultants and members of The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. NVQs are widely accepted as being assets to any company wishing to increase the competence of its staff and the organization. Business Safety Systems is widely accepted as one of the most successful NVQ providers in the UK with over 900 successful candidates.
