UNIT 401 Evaluate and develop own practice

I'd like to state that I categorically do not want to plagerise anyones work, but, I do need a bit of guidnace.
Having just started (in the last two weeks) the NVQ4 OSH, I decided to tackle Unit 1. I'd been told that many candidates struggle with this Unit as it requires you to 'talk about yourself. This I don't have a problem with.
The problem I have is where do I start?
Do I talk about how I got into H&S, how my careers developed, where I am now etc. etc.
I think I'm just having problems interpreting the 'NVQ talk'. If anyone could provide me with some guidelines/hints/tips it would be greatly appreciated. Please let me re-iterate, I do not want to copy anyones work, I just want guidance on structure.

Your assessor will be looking for examples of how you have evaluated data and information (both from external sources and internally) and the decisions that you have made based on your evaluation.

Personal appraisals - how does your boss assess your performance and professionalism both theoretically and practically and how have you reacted to any criticism that has been levelled in your direction. This could be on specific lack of knowledge or perhaps how you have mishandled a situation - the evidence will be looking for how you have dealt with the criticism in a positive manner.

What sources of information do you use; what type of information do you obtain from these sources. We all use the HSE web site for regulatory information and guidance, but what sources do you use for monitoring changes in professional practice both national and local.

Your personal development plan, where are you now, where do you want to be in three years time and how are you going to get there. Think laterally on this one, it may be your own personal development plan but you also have to consider the health and safety needs of the business and how you are going to achieve the objectives. It is useful to be able to demonstrate how you have revised this on an on-going basis based perhaps on the demands of the business. This will also enable you to evaluate your own practice against set targets and goals that may be detailed in your personal appraisal.

We also need to show where we have been asked for guidance and information from non health and safety professionals. Evidence needs to show, the sources of information that you have used ( a minimum of three sources) your evaluation of the information
and the reply that you have given ensuring that this does not create problems for the recipient i.e. your evaluation is correct.

You need to look at the Performance Criteria (PC) for Unit 1, and match your personal description to meet these.
For example, if the PC realtes to carrying out Risk Assessments relate your experience of developing and carrying these out for a range of activities/environments.

I am finding all the units difficult, in the way they ask the questions and how they want it formatted etc however the unit your refering to is one of the units I have got signed off.

I identified a gap in my training with the new noise regulations coming in, I then took a course in noise assessments to fill the training gap.

My weaknesses came from my appraisal from which I then tried to correct.

I also developed a Career development plan which included a storyboard (brainstorm) of where I was now and where I wanted to be (my goals) from that I showed a possible path to allow me to achieve my goals.

Hope this helps and any support on any other units would be appriciated.

I wonder if anyone can help. I have just started my NVQ.

we have to include 3 pieces of evidence for being asked for advise that does not cause problems for others, under what section within this unit do these go in?

also ' describe how you tried new practices that did not cause problems for others' what sort of things are they looking for?

Any advice on all units would be a great help to me.

Thank you

Hi Buddy,

i was stuck on this one myself until the tutor told me that....

When you try a new practice does it cause trouble for others. This means: did you try sometihing new that may have affected othe people but it actually ran smoothly

For example: yur company didnt do COSHH assessments until you went on a health and safety course. You came back from the course and decided to COSHH assess all your chemicals to get your company up to speed on everything. Did this action or exercise cause trouble to others ie) storeman??? works manager etc (did they have to stop their job or stop work), did it run smoothly ??? what else did you have to do as a result ie) training or educational things

The best piece of evidence to meet this criteria is a witness statement from a colleague. I got mine from my boss after i had been on a noise course and implemented ideas and SSW at work

Hope this is of some assistance, if not maybe someone can add more ???

For this unit, i based it on a SWOT anaylsis and extended it !!!

For 401.1

I did a SWOT analysis in relation to development and implementation of a SMS.

401.2 I produced an assessment of work that i did for European Health and Saftey week and expanded on it

401.3 I gave clear identifiaction in the involvement of others in Hand Arm vibration survey

401.4 Feedback on Grinding Survey (that i did in the factory) to help enable further development of the project

401.5 I used a critical email from a course assessor that said politely that i was not ready to take on a high level qualification and advised me to lower my sights

401.6 Orogonal goals reviewed and revised relating to the SWOT analysis

I have been treading water for the last few week having just started my NVQ 4, i am having a bit of a thick moment.

Reflective accounts is what my tutor has asked.

What are they, and is there an easier way?

Anonymous said...

Andy,

Reflect on something = how did it go? did it cause problems ? are you better for it ? will you do it again? has it added to your experience? etc etc

Reflect on your career so far. Is it where you want to be? how can you change it? what are your goals?

So many questions. Hope this helps pal

I signed up with the North East Worcs College for the web-based eNVQ course last month. A very helpful and interactive group and a pleasure to be associating with a diverse gathering from many different industries. I've spent the last nineteen years rubbing shoulders with the oil industry only so it's good to have some real world input.
But I need help too; particularly in terms of what my submissions need to look like. When you do the diploma course there are old exam papers to look at, previous questions to ponder, examples of generic text-book answers to mull over and theoretical assignments to shuffle through. It's tangible, touchy-feely! But with this eNVQ stuff I've got no reference points. I don't know what the submission is supposed to look like! Is it - before I ask my tutor (ie. my assessor!) - ethical to get a copy of someone else's submission so at least I'm not doing it blindfold. It's not something that can be cut and pasted after all. I'm particularly lost on the very first two elements. 'Evaluate and Develop own Practice'. Where do I start?!

Unit 401 Evaluate and develop own practice
"Self Appraisal"

A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and
pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he
could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven
digits (phone numbers).

The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation:

Boy: "Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?

Woman: (at the other end of the phone line): "I already have someone to
cut my lawn."

Boy: "Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who
cuts your lawn now."

Woman: I'm very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting my lawn.

Boy: (with more perseverance) : "Lady, I'll even sweep
your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will
have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach , Florida."

Woman: No, thank you.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy.

Store Owner: "Son... I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job."

Boy: "No thanks,

Store Owner: But you were really pleading for one.

Boy: No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!"

This is what we call "Self Appraisal"
